m2Work is
a worldwide challenge and a joint project of infoDev and Nokia’s Ideas Project. infoDev is a global partnership program
in the World Bank, focusing on technology entrepreneurship and job creation.
Microwork
follows a simple concept: numerous people around the world are earning money by
completing small digital tasks. Microwork has vast potential to create hundreds
of thousands of jobs in developing countries, where the key is mobile
technology. Currently, microworkers need access to computers, which are
expensive and require infrastructure. But if they could work on their mobile
phones, considering the approximately 5 billion phones in developing countries,
this could have an enormous job creation potential in the developing world.
Submitting to m2Work is a great chance for coders to win decent prize money, to
get privileged access to our mLab pre-incubation program, and also to build the
community around the emerging topic of mobile microwork. Infodev also offers
several steps to guide ideas to the market, including coaching for the
challenge winners, more outreach to local mobile developer communities, and
local microwork events at mLabs.
May 18-20, there will be a global m2Work hackathon, concluding the
challenge, with local hackathons at each of the 5 mLabs. More information about
this will be public soon
We encourage all members to submit (see prize deadlines on www.ideasproject.com/m2Work)
and/or to join the local events, in particular at mLab East Africa.
