Back in December 2011 a few leaders of the African software developers community namely Max Bonbhel and Lamine Ba presidents of JUGAfrica and SeneJUG respectively created a challenge for African developers to showcase their skills by creating Android based App. The competition is called: Africa Android Challenge. The objective behind the competition is for African developers to create local application relative to African context and content...

Besides just creating Apps, candidates also had the opportunity to provide Android courses for developers who are new to the platform and want to start developing mobile Apps on Android.

The competition has now ended and judges are filtering possible winners. 85 Apps were submitted, 60 will be selected for a second round judging (semi final) on March 30th. The list of submitted Apps can be found here APPS. The list of the prizes can be found in the awards section of the challenge siteThe challenge has been sponsored by: Google, JcertifVMTECH and eapps

This is the type of activities that African developers should leverage at the maximum for several reasons. First it will give them more visibility and presence globally and therefore draw more job and entrepreneurship opportunities. Second the increase development of more mobile apps relative to African content on smartphone such as Android will eventually drive the wider adoption of smartphones by African citizens and subsequently decrease their prices.

All organizers and participants deserve encouragements. Let's hope that we continue to have more and more of these type of activities to simulate the growth of context aware smartphone apps in Africa and at the time same sharpen the skills of mobile Apps African developers.

Stay tune for more information as the challenge is the near the end.

PS: AAC organizers are looking for more local judges:
