Jiamulie

Presented by Robert Gitata

Strathmore University students presented an application called Jiamulie that works in the field of road safety. The application gives the users information about road crimes and road safety. It has various modules among which, one presents the user with information about a crime that they may have committed, the description, penalties and from which arm of the law....

Road safety tips, reminders such as buckling up and areas on the road that are flagged as black spots.

The application also gives real-time info on the state of roads, be it traffic, diversions, accidents or even closure. It relies on its users to chip in with the provision of this information. The application is available for free downloads in the next few days.

Semacraft

Presented by Muchiri Nyaggah

It is a management consulting firm that helps businesses innovate. The presentation was about a model called p5 that helps developers create, deploy and sustain their innovations.

The presentation was centered on targeting the correct “persona” when developing applications. ”Persona” means the target person as is represented in the market. An example is “mama mboga” who is represented all over Kenya and possibly a large part of the world.

After identifying a sensible persona, the p5 model follows the following steps;

a) Pain: Identify the pain of the persona. This is synonymous to their needs.

b) Platform: Presents an aid for their pain on the most suitable platform; be it mobile (android, Java ME, iOS etc.)

c) Payment: Identify the most appropriate payment scheme for the app; be it downloads, advertising etc.

d) Protection: Maintenance of the app and ensuring it is constantly being used.

Codeigniter Framework part II

Presented by Anne Mukundi

CodeIgniter is a framework that uses a MVC approach. MVC stands for Model-View-Controller. It separates the business logic and user views of an application. The go between is the Controller.
This was a practical session where the participants were able to use web development tools together with the CodeIgniter framework.
The framework works as follows;
The VIEW handles client-side functionality i.e. HTML, JS, CSS, inline PHP etc.
The CONTROLLER handles page requests; it loads models and views, calls helpers etc.
The MODEL holds classes that represent data (database) and business logic (core functionality)

C# and Java

Unfortunately time was short and both the C# and Java sessions couldn’t take place. The participants were however notified of their existence and introduced to Pluralsight. Better care will be taken in the future to ensure that all sessions are covered and the time limits will be adhered to.

AOB

Joseph talked about the upcoming Coders4Africa J2ME and Android boot camp, the applications that will be developed by the participants of the boot camp in groups and the incubation that these applications will get. The boot camp is scheduled for April 28th 2012 at Strathmore University.
